Offering assessments in a remote setting will require some planning. For remote delivery, the primary concern should be assessing how well students have achieved the key learning objectives and determining what objectives are still unmet. It may be necessary to modify the nature of the assessment to allow for the more limited affordances of the remote environment.
Some potential types of assessment include:
- D2L exams
- Choose questions from a pool of questions
- Randomize question sequence
- Timed tests
- Limit the time that the exam is available
- If you are using essay exams consider using the Assignment tool with Turnitin function turned on
- If using D2L’s testing tool, consider creating a question pool, and have the test randomly pull questions from the pool. Also consider having the system randomize answer order. Finally, putting a time limit on the test can also limit student ability to simply look up answers.
- Better still, offer assessments that dissuade cheating. These include written response, projects, and participation-specific exercises.
- Consider reducing the point value of online exams and increasing point value of a face-to-face final (in the hopes that classes can resume by the end of semester)
- In lieu of exams, consider assigning more short answer assignments, essays, creative works, etc.
- Give a prominent place to the Academic Pledge: http://splife.studentlife.msu.edu/spartan-code-of-honor-academic-pledge
D2L has the functionality to offer multiple question types, such as multiple choice, short answer, true/false, matching, etc. and it is free. However, it has only a few security options to discourage cheating. Assignments and activities may also be created as a Survey either in D2L or using MSU’s Qualtrics instance https://qualtrics.msu.edu
