Lectures can be created and offered using a combination of Office 365 (PowerPoint), Zoom, Mediaspace, and D2L. This will allow you to give and record your presentation (PowerPoint and Zoom) and deliver it to students (Mediaspace and D2L). We recommend you schedule online sessions during a time your course already occupies. Videos may be recorded via Zoom and then streamed to students via MSU Mediaspace and D2L.
Schedule your online sessions during the time that your course already occupies. This guarantees that students already have the availability in their schedule and you will not be impinging on other courses or outside obligations of students.Tell students to plan to attend an online class at the normally scheduled meeting time. Lectures can be conducted live via Zoom with/without screen sharing slides, and recorded for future viewing.
- Lectures can be conducted live via Zoom. Instructors can share links to their Zoom meeting site in D2L and clearly communicate when these sessions will take place.
- Zoom sessions can be recorded, and those recordings can be posted in MSU Media Space.
- Instructors can create asynchronous lectures using either Zoom or MSU Media Space to create a screen capture video. This video can then be posted in MSU Media Space.
- MSU Media Space can provide machine-generated captions at no cost. While these are not perfect, given the circumstances they will be helpful.
- Zoom and video content are bandwidth intensive and may be problematic for some students. In lieu of using technology to replicate a lecture session, consider alternate means of content delivery:
- Lecture outlines or notes with shared PowerPoint slides
- Guided note-taking sheets or graphic organizers to guide students through their assigned readings
- Audio recordings use less bandwidth and could be coupled with shared PPTs, worksheets, and/or images
- Use D2L discussion boards to post key points from each lecture, then pose probing questions about those key points
Generally your workflow will unfold like this:
